"Drawing" Conclusions

My 10-week figure sketching course at NHIA is concluded. I am grateful for the experience and wish to thank all the models and my teacher Larry Christian. This subject of this final piece I’ve posted is actually a student from the class. His contemplative look gave me pause to review how this course has benefited my cosmetic practice. Over these months, I have honed my craftsmanship in liposculpting by gaining an appreciation for the flow lines of the human figure as they run along the entire length of the body. This conceptualization breaks the mold of the traditional medical approach to the body as isolated cosmetic units. Additionally, repeated drawing of lines of symmetry in the dynamic figure, particularly in torso twisted poses, accentuates my visual observation skills at detecting asymmetries so prevalent in all normal human anatomy. It is this keen observation that leads to greater accuracy of target areas enhancing the outcome of a liposuction case. I hope to have the opportunity to take “Sculpting the Figure” this spring at NHIA.

I mentioned that we do several dozen one-minute gesture drawings at the start of class designed to quickly capture the feeling of the pose.   Here is one from this week.

Figure Drawing

Well, I'm halfway through my 10 week course at the New Hampshire Institute of Art and I thought it was about time I shared one of my drawings. Normally, we only get one minute to capture the gist of the model (called gesture drawings). But we had 10 minutes to complete this one. I've definitely learned it's a lot harder than it looks to sketch from a live model! I highly recommend Larry Christian as a teacher for any future students.
