Update: Dermasculpt, Oxygenetix, & new Staff!
Clients have been absolutely thrilled this past month with the results of the Dermasculpt method of delivering facial filler. I have been able to do comprehensive facial filler rejuvenation that I could have never imagined before with needles.
I am finding that if several areas are needed and there is a lot of correction to achieve or if it is your first time getting filler, then the 2.0 cc of Restylane is best. The good news is that it is normally $899, but during our summer $100 off sale, it is only $699 -- bringing the price per cc down to an unheard of less than $350! (the regular price of 1 cc syringe is $529) But don't wait.... this special ends 8/30/12.
The Oxygenetix products have been a total blockbuster and I cannot keep it on the shelves. We offer a sample application & color match at any of your visits. But be warned, once you try it , you will be hooked! The concealer/foundation is only $69 and the moisturizer is $89.
We have several new staff members who are eager to serve your cosmetic needs -- come on down and meet the new crew!

Oxygenetix. The Breathable Foundation
At my
conference in Vegas, I stumbled upon a real gem of a product line:
Oxygenetix Foundation & Moisturizer.
Their medical grade concealer goes beyond mineral makeup. It actually attracts vital oxygen to the skin. You won’t even feel like you have anything on because it does not create any barrier on your skin. Yet it is sturdy and holds up with heat (that’s why Hollywood stars use it on the set under the hot lights). You can wear it during exercise. And it resists water contact for up to 90 minutes.
Because of its oxygen attraction, it is an excellent application immediately after a procedure because it actually promotes healing. With 10 different colors, you can easily hide needle marks from Botox or fillers and redness from laser, peels, IPL, or microdermabrasion. And best of all, it has sunscreen SPF 25.

Continuing Medical Education, Las Vegas
I just returned from Vegas Cosmetic Surgery 2012. I have attended in the past, and it is definitely my favorite conference. The national and international experts had so much knowledge and experience to share about the latest techniques in facial injections, lasers, and skincare. I learned so much that will enhance the care I deliver to all of my clients. Including the bonus sessions, I was able to earn 43.5 hours of continuing medical education credits. Please stop in so we can chat about how I can help you achieve your cosmetic desires better than ever!

Blunt Cannulas for Fillers
I attended the Vegas Cosmetic Surgery Symposium this month put on by The MuliSpecialty Foundation and learned so much about this exciting new delivery method of your favorite fillers.
Normally, fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm require many needle sticks to the face and lips to achieve desired results, sometimes 15 -20 or more. Blunt cannulas, Dermasculpt brand for example, have a soft rounded tip (no point) and can gently move through the tissues of the face to reach the places that need filler.
Because they are blunt, they DO NOT cause painful pricks or cutting and rupturing of tiny blood vessels which cause bruising. The small blood vessels get gently nudged aside as the blunt tip gently glides through the tissue. Blunt cannulas only require several and possibly as few as 2 superficial needle "starter holes" to create an entry point for he cannulas.
If you've been scared to try fillers and have put it off, your waiting has paid off. Come give it a try!

Smoothskin gets Greener

You may notice a "little sister" dumpster when you now pull into our parking lot. When my daughter worked in the office over the holidays, she was surprised to see how many cardboard cartons pass through our doors as our supplies are shipped in. It bothered her that these were going into the regular waste. It took some effort and rearranging but we are now proudly participating in single stream RECYCLING! Thank you Gina :)

Supersize my Restylane
As an injector, I found the ease of using this syringe to be the same as its little sister. There is no sense that it is bulky in my hands and I am able to do what I usually do, only more! Now you can get your smile lines done and your lips (now FDA-approved) in the same sitting. Or you can get a better fill of deeper lines or more facial areas. This subjects you to fewer injection visits and best of all, saves you money because my cost for a double-sized syringe is less that 2 individual syringes.

New FDA labelling on SUNSCREENS

SPF 50 HIGHEST LABEL. SPF 50 is now the highest assigned SPF value permissible. There is insufficient evidence that higher SPF’s provide sufficient protection.
CANCER PROTECTION ONLY at SPF 15 of HIGHER. Products must be broad spectrum (both UVA-A & UV-B ray protection) & have an SPF of 15 or higher to claim they protect against skin cancer and premature aging. SPF lower than 15 can only say they protect against sunburn.
CAN’T SAY WATERPROOF Waterproof, sweatproof, and sunblock are prohibited terms. They cannot claim more than 2 hrs. of protection without the need to reapply. They can still say “water resistant” if they state how many minutes after sweating or swimming you will be required to reapply.
FDA to post Graphic Images w/ New Cigarette Warning Labels
9 New Labels represent the greatest change to cigarette labeling in 25 yrs. They will include such phrases as "Smoking can kill you" and "Cigarettes cause Cancer." Graphic images such as the one below will accompany the warnings. Tobacco is responsible for 443,000 deaths in the U.S. per year.

EMR: A Wedge between You & your Doctor
The electronic medical record (EMR) or the electronic health record (EHR) is quickly becoming an integral tool in the primary care and other office settings. While many support its use for efficiencies of information storage and information sharing, reduction in errors from illegible handwriting, and ease of third party payment, I believe the single greatest flaw that has resulted it use is the complete loss of eye contact with your health care provider.
My experience on the patient’s side of the desk has been doctors keeping their heads bent down to the screen in a busy effort to complete the necessary keystrokes and electronic checkmarks for the encounter. I can’t remember the last time a doc looked at me since these tablets and other devices have infiltrated the medical office setting.
What is being missed here is the grave importance of listening to the patient’s history in order to reach an accurate diagnosis. More than eighty percent of the information necessary to reach a diagnosis for treatment comes from the medical history. About another ten percent from the physical exam and the smallest percent come from diagnostic tests such as labwork and imaging. Sir William Osler said, “Listen to your patients. They’re trying to tell you what’s wrong.” How can a doctor listen adequately to a patient if they have their eyes glued to the screen of an EMR?
It seems to me, if a doctor cannot listen with eye contact, there cannot be accurate history taking. Without this vital information, there is a greater likelihood of hit-and-miss scenarios with repeat visits, redirecting treatment plans, or worse -- missed diagnoses leading to a more serious medical scenario. Where is the efficiency here?
