Freezing Away Fat

A recent study published in Lasers in Surgery & Medicine (Dec 09) by Avram and Harry describes a procedure known as Cryolipolysis.  ZELTIQ, a controlled cooling device, induces inflammation in fatty areas that result in the gradual reduction of fat over 2 - 4 months.   The device applies suction on the outside of the skin and specifically cools the desired fat loss area, causing damage to only fat cells sparing the surrounding tissues.  It is done as an outpatient, requires no pain management, and typically takes one hour.  There have been no significant side effects identified as yet and there is no downtime.  There is no evidence as of now that this device will play any role in reducing large areas of fat and is geared more towards normal weight individuals with modest fatty areas.  Further study is needed to better understand the procedure.  It is NOT FDA-approved for Fat Loss at the present time.  We look forward to hearing more about this interesting procedure.
